How To Transport Bike in Train (Procedure & Charges)
Do you want to transport your bike in train?
Rail transportation is the easiest way to send bikes from one state to another.
It is a straightforward process, but sometimes it becomes complicated to transfer the bike due to not taking care of all the things.
In this blog post, I will tell you how to parcel your bike in a train.
How To Transport Bike in Train
You have two options to transport the bike by train:
- As a Luggage
- As a Parcel
Let’s first talk about how you can send your bike as luggage on the train.
As a Luggage
To transfer the bike as luggage, you will also have to travel with the bike.
This method is the best option for those who are carrying the bike themselves.
You must follow a process to transport a bike in the train as luggage.
Before understanding this process, let me tell you that you will need some documents which will be required while transporting the bike, and they are as follows:
- Bike’s RC (Registration Certificate)
- Sender’s Government ID Proof (ex., Aadhar Card)
- Reciever’s Government ID Proof (ex., Aadhar Card)
- Insurance Copy
- Your Reservation Ticket
Here you have to take care of two things.
First, only the motorcycle owner’s ID is valid as a government ID.
And secondly, since you are traveling with the bike and will receive it yourself at the destination station, you can enter your ID as the recipient.
After keeping all the documents with you, you have to go to the railway station and get your reservation done.
For this process, it is better to go to the railway station a few hours in advance, so you have enough time to complete the formalities.
Rider’s Note:- Before reaching the railway station, make sure that your bike has only enough petrol to reach the station. Keeping petrol in the motorcycle during transfer is strictly prohibited, and you cannot carry it with you. Doing so can result in heavy fines and legal proceedings.
Let’s now come back to the process.
Here’s a complete step-by-step guide to sending a bike as luggage:
- Reach the railway station and get the bike packed (for packing, you will get workers who will pack the bike for some money)
- Please ensure that a piece of cardboard is securely fastened to the top of the bike, with the names of the starting and destination stations clearly written on it.
- Visit Railway Parcel Booking Office with all your documents.
- You will be given a form in which important information has to be filled, like your name, originating address, mobile number, destination address, etc.
- After filling out the form, you will have to pay some charges and get the luggage ticket (The charges depend on the value of the bike and the distance between originating and the destination address).
- Get the bike loaded carefully on the arrival of the train.
- On reaching the destination station, ensure the bike is unloaded correctly.
- Get your bike by giving the luggage ticket to the railway staff at the destination station.
Advantages of Transporting Bike As Luggage
- This method of taking the bike on the train is relatively safe as you are traveling with the bike yourself.
- It takes the same time to transport the bike as it takes you to reach the destination station.
- You can keep a good eye on the packing quality of the bike so that it does not get damaged during transportation.
- The most significant advantage of this method is that you can carefully load and unload the bike on the train as the bike suffers maximum damage in the process.
- After reaching the destination station, you can get your bike immediately.
Disadvantages of Transporting Bike As Luggage
- This method of bike transport is a bit expensive.
- One has to bother loading and to unload the bike.
Now let’s talk about the second way of transporting the bike by train.
As a Parcel
This mode of bike transport is the best option for those who cannot travel with a bike.
To send the bike as a parcel, you will need some documents, which are as follows:
- Bike’s RC (Registration Certificate)
- Sender’s Government ID Proof (ex., Aadhar Card)
- Reciever’s Government ID Proof (ex., Aadhar Card)
- Insurance Copy
Rider’s Note:- Keep in mind that you should put the ID of the person in the form who can pick up your bike at the destination station.
These are the steps you have to follow:
- Reach the railway station and get your bike packed (make sure the fuel tank is empty)
- Make sure that the names of the originating and destination stations are mentioned correctly on the bike.
- Visit Railway Parcel Booking Office with the documents mentioned above.
- You will get a form on which you fill in all the required information.
- Pay the charge and get the Parcel receipt.
Advantages of Transporting Bike As Parcel
- In transporting the bike by train as a parcel, you have to pay up to 25% less as compared to luggage.
- There is no need for you to travel with the bike.
- You do not need to worry about loading and unloading the bike.
Disadvantages of Transporting Bike As Parcel
- Transporting the bike may take a few days as the railways decide on which train to transport your bike.
- If you do not receive the bike at the destination station within 6 hours, you will have to pay an additional charge of Rs 10 per hour.
Things to Remember While Transporting a Bike
Now that you have understood both methods of transporting a bike in the train, it is important that you take care of a few things.
- Make sure the train stops at least 10 minutes at the destination station where you are sending the bike.
- Some documents are required to transport the bike in the train, which I have mentioned in the above methods; keep in mind that the documents should be of the bike’s owner only.
- Before transporting the bike, ensure the fuel tank is empty; otherwise, you may have to pay a heavy fine.
- When you fill out the form, you have to mention the bike’s value there so that you can get the bike amount in case of an accident or theft.
- This amount also affects the cost of transporting the bike. The higher the amount, the higher the charges.
- If you have installed any expensive accessories on the bike, take them off when packing.
- The better you get the packing done, the lesser the chances of damage to the bike.
Bottom Line
In this way, you can send your bike from one state to another in train.
I believe that transporting your bike as luggage is more secure.
This is because you are present throughout the entire process, from loading your bike onto the train to unloading it at the destination station.
If you have any experience with transporting your bike on a train, I would love for you to share it with our readers.
It would be very helpful for them to learn from your experience.
